Supervisor: Dr. Rebeca Marcilla

Research topic: Polymer-based redox flow battery system and characterisation

I am Athul, an Indian national. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from SASTRA Deemed University in Tamil Nadu, India. My focus of research for my bachelor’s project was on nanocomposite proton exchange membranes for methanol fuel cells. I went on to pursue my Master’s degree in Process Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg, Germany. The research for my Master’s thesis was performed under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ir. Kitty Nijmeijer and Dr. Zandrie Borneman in the Membrane Materials and Processes (MMP) research lab at TU Eindhoven, Netherlands. The aim of research was to study the stability of Layer-by-Layer (LbL) polyelectrolyte multilayer membranes.

I feel honored and excited to be a part of the ETN consortium of POLYSTORAGE for my PhD. I’m eager to work on providing next generation, sustainable energy storage solutions in Redox Flow Batteries. Furthermore, conducting research in the industrial setting of Energy Storage Solutions would help me to work with a long-term vision towards a large-scale energy storage system.

Aside from my professional desire, I’m a football fanatic and enjoy playing football. I love to cook or rather I must cook, being a vegetarian.
